The Preakness is the second race of the American thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown series. It attracts horses from the Kentucky Derby such as the winner and the horses that didn’t start and some others. In this case we have the Kentucky Derby winner and the Third place in that same race listed to run this race. The race is going to be taking place at Pimlico race track located at Baltimore, Maryland.
The Preakness was founded by Maryland governor Oden Bowie, who named the then mile and one-half race in honor of the colt named “Preakness” from Milton Holbrook in New Jersey. That horse deserved the honor to have the race on its name because it won the Dinner Party Stakes on the day Pimlico Race Course opened on October 25, 1870.
The race competition takes place at Baltimore, Maryland at the Pimlico Race Course and is usually two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. This time is going to be the Saturday May 16th and the track they will run is exactly 1-3/16 mile long which is approximately 1.91 Km.
The Preakness Stakes has been called "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because a blanket of Black-eyed Susans which is the state flower of Maryland. That Blanket is traditionally placed around the winner's neck.
